Thy lightnings enlightened the world: the earth shook and trembled.
-- Ps. lxxvi. 19
In Acts we read how the Apostles reacted when they were admonished by the Sanhedrin not to ever teach in Jesus' name again, but they chose not to obey the authorities and continued teaching in our Lord's name as though nothing had ever happened to them. The spreading of the Gospel, the Good News, was sent forth with the selfless brave actions of the Apostles.
Why? Because the Apostles had seen the risen Christ with their own eyes. The power of this witness was the very reason that Christianity came alive and exploded to the four corners of the earth like it did. Without the resurrection of Jesus Christ, its eyewitness to the Apostles on at least three occasions, and hundreds of other faithful followers eye-witness of the risen Christ during this period in Jerusalem, Christianity would have been nothing but a sad story of another fake teacher in Jerusalem put to death by the Pharisees and the Roman overlords.
At this time of the year in the Church we look forward to re-experiencing the celebration of Pentecost. It is the next great expectation in the drive to broadcast the "Good News" about Jesus' resurrection and his return to earth once again, on three separate appearances, to make clear in the minds of the Apostles that he was, indeed, the risen Christ.
In today's holy Gospel reading, John 3:31-36, we read the words: The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him. In the Old Testament we read about the "rationing of the Holy Spirit" and here John reminds his followers that God does not ration the Holy Spirit, and that the Son who was sent by his Father is the truth itself. In Matthew 28:20 we read: "I, the Lord, am with you always, until the end of the world, alleluia."
PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
Come Holy Spirit
Fill the hearts of the faithful and kindle in
them the fire of Your love. Send forth your Spirit
and they shall be created and You shall renew
the face of the Earth. Oh God Who by the light
of the Holy Spirit instructed the hearts of the
faithful: grant that by the same Spirit we may
be truly wise and rejoice in His consolation.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
