The second story in Luke chapter eleven reminds us that man was running away from God in Jonah's time just like one was doing during Christ's day and man continues to do so now in our time. - Forsyth, Georgia -
Just as Jonah decided to disobey God and instead of going to Nineveh as the Lord instructed him he went to the sea and boarded a ship to sail away from what he was supposed to do; to go and tell the Ninevites to stop their evil ways and repent. Jonah was sure that no one would listen to him, and that his message would be rejected by the prosperous free spirited people of that time. They were living a life of luxury and excesses completely rejecting the laws that God taught his people.
After being thrown off the ship and landing in the stomach of the Whale, God let him stay inside the giant fish for three days, and then he was spit out into the sea. He then swam to shore frightened but safe. For as much as Jonah did not want to do as he was instructed to do, he finally traveled inland to Nineveh and began preaching to the people. To his utter amazement the people responded, listened and repented and did exactly what he told them to do.
Here again we see that history repeats itself 400+ years before Christ's arrival on earth, during Christ's teaching of his disciples and we see the manifestations throughout the world today. Only, the disobedience is more widespread now and twenty centuries later the sins of greed and egocentricity consume us the same way they did in our beginnings in the Garden of Eden. Are we listening to the warnings that God is sending us?
